KATHY DOUGHTY
Owner of Material Obsession and successful author, Kathy is an experienced and passionate teacher, with a particular focus on guiding students to explore colour and design in their quilting making.
Kathy offers four types of classes at Material Obsession:
NEW !!
Medallion quilts liberated – drawing inspiration from Gwen Marston’s Liberated Medallion Quilts, this class will take a fresh look at Medallion quilts and all their possibilities. Includes looking at a variety of Medallion centre options as well as building a quilt border by border.
3rd Wednesday of each month; 10 – 3 pm, $50 per class
Out of Line – using interpretative design skills, this class will examine line, shape and form. Work with solids, still life, landscape and faces and, in each case, incorporating a variety of techniques.
1st Monday of each month; 10 – 3 pm, $50 per class
Stash to Treasure – by studying antique and traditional quilt layouts for design concepts, this class involves drawing inspiration from the old and using fabrics available today. Bring your stash...you bought it, now use it!
1st Wednesday or 4th Tuesday of each month; 10 – 3 pm, $50 per class
The Promise of Joy– this class focuses on the quilts in Kathy’s latest book, Making Quilts, the Promise of Joy – drawing inspiration to create your own or using the templates that Kathy designed to expand the possibilities.
4th Friday of each month; 10 – 3 pm, $50 per classs


WENDY WILLIAMS
Wendy is an experienced teacher and quilter,as well as a prolific designer with many patterns available for an array of quilted products – quilts, bags and cushions, to name a few.
In all of Wendy’s classes, you can start from Wendy’s technique of the moment or bring in your own ideas and patterns for guidance. Each class features a technique demonstration.
Wendy offers two types of classes at Material Obsession:
Technique classes, in which you can learn and develop different piecing and quilting techniques. Technique classes include everything from squares, triangles and circles to machine or hand piecing and appliqué to foundation piecing, inset seams and curves. These classes are suitable for all quilters from beginners to experienced quilters.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays – enquire for dates; 10 – 1 pm, $40 per class
New traditions – wool and more, the focus in this class will be looking at how to expand your projects – by using wool and other embellishment in your quilts or making items beyond quilts, such as a bag, a cushion, a rag rug etc.
2nd and 4th Mondays of each month; 10 – 3 pm, $50 per class.
GRACE WIDDERS
Grace is our beginner teacher. Her kind and gentle nature combined with years of teaching experience make her a welcome addition to our staff this year. Grace has been managing the introduction of quilting in the evening classes through the year and has set many a beginner off and running in a short amount of time.
