Our classes are all held in the shop. They are limited to 8 people and sold in semesters. We do not teach classes during the summer school holidays. Prices are set at the beginning of the semester based on the number of available dates. Coffee and tea service available in all classes. Our all-day classes include a snack. Due to dietary restrictions we will no longer offer a full lunch
• Payment of fees for each semester in advance. A deposit (equal to one class fee) on the last day of semester is required to secure your place for the following term.
• The balance of class fees for a semester is due on the first class date of that semester regardless of attendance.
• Payment of class fees is non-refundable unless we cancel the class. If you cannot attend a class and you give us one week's notice, every effort will be made to provide a make-up class if a place is available in another class.
• Make-Up classes must be taken in the same semester as the class that was missed.
Kathy is the owner and leader of Material Obsession, a place where quilters can explore creative aspirations, quality products and interesting techniques taught by generous, talented quilters. Working in the shop for over 17 years has provided a platform of experience that enables creating a space where people feel comfortable being creative.

One day workshops
Friday 31st January, 10am- 3pm, Soul Searching, $65 per class
Understanding line and how to create it in quilts is a skill every quilter needs to practice. Soul Searching is a basic structure used for selecting fabrics. Practice grouping similar and contrasting fabrics, considering your personal favourites and learn how to use them as a tool. Understand your comfort zone and how to work it with balance.
Friday 14th February, 10am- 3pm, Mariners Compass, $65 per class
Good rulers are especially handy for those of us that have a stash! Use the Robin Ruth Mariner’s Compass Ruler to make spectacular blocks with ease. The blocks look tricky to make but are made with strips using the templates and fantastic instructions.
Friday 13th March, 10am- 3pm, Modern Wedge, $65 per class
A long time favourite, the wedge is a tool that provides never-ending fun. Use your stash or favourite new collection with a wedge and make quilts you never dreamed of before! Cut precisely, sew confidently and make great quilts!
Friday 29th May, 10am- 3pm, Organic Applique, $65 per class
Organic Applique is the text book for original quilts using a few simple techniques easily learned and creatively applied. Spend the day practicing the techniques and breaking down the elements of the project you want to make from the book or your imagination!
Wendy is a generous and talented artist with a background in teaching and design that she shares freely in her classes. Her days are spent teaching at Material Obsession, throughout Australia and the world, while her nights are spent creating new designs! Wendy’s popular patterns are appreciated around the world in staggering numbers. Working with wool felt or felted wool and embroidery stitches are her specialty areas but her skills extend through all patchwork techniques and sewing methods including clothes, bags, and cushions.
Wendy is a multi-prize winning quilter, is widely published and has written one book so far, Wild Blooms and Colourful Creatures…a best seller

New Traditions
1st Monday of each month or
3rd Monday of each month;
10 – 3 pm, $65 per class.
Explore a variety of patchwork techniques as you expand your skill base throughout the year with Wendy. Work at your own pace on existing projects or start a new one with the prepared lesson for each class. This year Wendy will present a new twist on some of her favourite techniques with a focus on design layout options. Elements with a modern theme in solids or prints can be personalised with instruction!
Mixed Technique
1st Wednesday of each month, 10am – 3pm, $65 per class,

3rd Thusday of each month, 10am – 1pm, $45 per class,
1st Wednesday evening of each month, 7.30pm – 9.30pm, $35 per class,

Explore a variety of techniques in a range of techniques including everything from squares, triangles and circles to machine or hand piecing and appliqué to foundation piecing, inset seams and curves.
These classes are suitable for beginners to experienced quilters. This class may include wool applique.
Working With Wool
3rd Wednesday of each month,
10 – 1 pm, $45 per class
Delve into a world of mixed techniques supported with great instruction and lots of ideas for making quilts, cushions and more.
Embroidery Applique Sampler (10 - 2pm), $55 per class.
Karen has a background in Interior Decoration, which is evident in the choices she makes in patchwork. Her trained eye combined with thorough knowledge of embroidery and stitching techniques creates a learning environment with guaranteed original results! Follow Karen @kljohn31
This class is based on Seeds for Thought, the pictured quilt, which is an exploration of pieced blocks and a variety of embellished applique blocks. Blocks are inspired by real life observations with a touch of whimsy. Explore piecing options and applique with a touch of difference. Recreate what you see, personalise or design your own ideas using Karen’s expertise.
3rd Friday of the month – 10am – 1pm. $20 or $25 casually (subject to vacancies).
Here’s an opportunity to meet at the Shop and work on your WIPs! Join likeminded people for relaxed stitching and conversation. You will have access to Shop ‘tools’, sewing machines, teas and coffee, plus of course the chance to shop!!
Cath is a pillar of design at Material Obsession. She has been involved in every creative project in some way since she first walked through the door. Not one to brag or show off, Cath has an innate sense of style that she brings to quilting be it art, contemporary, traditional or scrap. Her history is long, her patience endless and her determination to use fabric strong!
Cath teaches resourceful use of fabric which includes but is not limited to string piecing. Examine traditional or modern blocks using scraps of fabric that eat away at your stash. Cath has a great perspective and an artful eye as well as a bucket full of skills.

Grace is an award winning quilter with a long practiced background in design and technique. As a teacher by trade, she is well versed in ensuring students have a solid foundation of skills.
Grace has been an institution at MO since the beginning, bringing her consistent creative talents and patient manner to the classroom. She teache Thursday evenings, a Beginner class on Saturdays and for 2020 will introduce Machine quilting workshops. Join Grace to work out the details of your own projects or let her guide you through her suggestions. Follow Grace @gracewidders
Beginners - Evenings at MO
2nd and 4th Thursday evenings;

Join Grace for a comfortable gathering while you continue learning techniques and build your skill base. Grace is never short of an idea or a suggestion for your next quilt! Work through the semester to complete a project at your own pace.
Beginners - 3rd Saturday each month;
(10.00 – 1.00 pm), $45 per class
At Material Obsession we are dedicated to good practical skills. This Saturday class is open for those that want to learn or fine tune their cutting, sewing and pressing skills for beautiful results.
Each class Grace will demonstrate a new technique or block to build knowledge, then, students are assisted with work on individual projects. Skills are developed through the semester to enable completion of your quilt.
Cut, sew, press accurately for perfect piecing and beautiful borders. Start right for a good finish!
Introduction to Machine Quilting
(10.00 – 3.00pm) Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June, $130
Join Grace for a weekend to gain confidence while learning how to finish quilts on your own machine! Over the weekend you will work on a small pre-prepared piece (details to follow) to hone your skills.
Day 1 - Grace will direct you how to pin baste your quilt, then, use your walking foot for straight-line quilting. This is a very practical and effective way to complete your quilt.
Day 2 - Grace will move on to some fun free motion options, including motif outlining and filling backgrounds.
Tea/coffee and morning tea provided. BYO lunch and machine. (Some machines may available at in store).
One on One
2hr appointment at the Shop - $80

Affectionately known as ‘the Pied Piper of quilting,’ Marg is a creative teacher, gentle mentor and an author… Join Marg for a series of classes that will connect you to your creative motivation.
Marg has vast experience across all areas of stitching, but is renowned for her handwork, including applique and paper piecing. Marg’s easy going nature creates an environment that is definitely sure to inspire.
The class covers the skills of handwork including applique, hexagons and design.

Practice design concepts behind making quilts that are inspired by an idea and enhanced by the classic ideas of art…line, composition, colour and more.
Improv has a modern reputation but it has been part of quilting forever and is all about story telling. No matter what kind of quilts you make, this class will add something to your future quilts!
